How Often to Replace a Car Battery

The majority of experts say that Chicago drivers should change your car battery about every 4-5 years. That can depend upon how you drive, what kind of car you’re driving, and many other factors. Read the Sunrise Chevrolet comprehensive breakdown on everything to consider when it comes to car battery replacement. We’ll cover how much a replacement car battery is, how to know if your car battery needs to be replaced, and how to test a car battery, as well.

How to Know If Your Car Battery Needs to Be Replaced

Carol Stream drivers now know how often to replace your car battery, but as we previously mentioned, your battery’s lifespan can vary widely depending on a number of factors. Thus, you should watch for a few signs that can indicate a failing battery:

  • More frequent need for engine revving or jump-starts
  • Dimming headlights
  • Unusual power fluctuations
  • Takes longer to start the engine when you turn the key/push the button

What Causes Car Battery Deterioration?

  • Vibrations: If the clamps that hold down your battery are loose or you drive on gravel roads frequently, you should know that frequent vibrations cause batteries to break down faster.
  • Needing a Jump: If you are prone to leaving your lights or letting your engine idle, the more often you accidentally need a jump, the faster your battery is breaking down.
  • Heat: If you live in the south, your battery will wear out faster. That’s because hot weather evaporates liquids inside your battery.

How to Test a Car Battery

When you get your bi-annual general maintenance at Sunrise Chevrolet, we’ll test your car battery and give you a clearer idea of where it’s at in its lifespan. If you’d like to perform a test yourself in the interim, you can do the following:

The Headlight Test:

  1. Turn on your engine, keep your car in park, and switch on the headlights.
  2. Rev the engine and see if the headlight brightness changes.
  3. If the headlights get brighter, that means that the current isn’t strong enough to keep the lights at a steady level while idling.

Using a Digital Multimeter:

  1. Set the voltmeter to 20 DC volts.
  2. Pop open the hood and touch the negative terminal (black) with the negative meter probe (also black).
  3. Then, you’ll want to touch the positive terminal (red) with the positive meter probe (also red).
  4. Have a friend turn on the headlights and check the voltmeter reading. At 80℉, 12.5 volts or higher means your battery is fully charged. 12.3 volts means it’s at about 75% charged.11.8 volts or lower means you have 25% or less charge.

How Much is a Replacement Car Battery?

Addison drivers can expect to pay between $75 and $120, and if you opt for a premium battery, that price can rise to $200. Also note that if you have a hybrid car, it has a much bigger job to perform. Hybrid batteries will cost you anywhere between $1,000 and $6,000.
