The Chevy Tahoe: The New American Classic

The Chevy Tahoe has become one of the most popular full-sized SUV’s on the market due to its sleek, handsome look and excellent controls. Glendale Heights and Bloomingdale see a lot of Tahoe’s toughing the rough winters, and many families have begun to adopt the new models. The Tahoe has been around for twenty years now, and has made great advancements each year, deepening its reputation as a dependable, innovative, American SUV. Check one out for yourself at Sunrise Chevrolet in Glendale Heights.

Debut and First Generation

The Tahoe debuted in 1992 as a three door SUV. The first generation lasted until 1999 and it featured a variety of features and trims that set it apart from other SUV’s. These options included:

  • Five and six door models
  • A 4.1 liter V6, a 5.7 V8, 4.0 turbo diesel and 6.5 turbo diesel engine options
  • Four-speed automatic and five-speed manual transmission options

The Tahoe quickly garnered respect in the auto industry, being named Motor Trend Magazine’s “Truck of the Year” in 1996. The first model was based on the award-winning Suburban but was significantly shorter and more streamlined.

The Second Generation and Redesigns

In 2000, a completely redesigned Tahoe hit the market and made a huge splash. It was now a four door SUV built on the GM GMT800 platform. All engine options were replaced and narrowed to two: a 4.8 liter 275 horsepower V8 and a 5.3 liter, 285 horsepower V8. Transmission options were also narrowed to a four speed automatic. This generation featured softer line, more aerodynamic design, new seats, a new dashboard, and brand new door panels. “StabiliTrak” stability controls, XM Satellite Radio, Bose audio, and a DVD entertainment system were also offered in 2003 to broad the vehicle’s appeal.

The Most Current Generation and Potential Futures

The second generation of the Tahoe was replaced by the third in 2007. It features increased engine options that include:

  • A 4.8 liter V8
  • A 5.3 liter V8
  • A 6.2 liter V8

Transmission is once again limited to automatic although it now features a six-speed option and a four-speed hybrid option. The new Tahoe continues to sell well in spite of increasing gas prices and dropping SUV sales throughout the market.
