Chevrolet Sonic

The Sonic Sets the Standard for the Subcompact Class

The Sonic is Chevy’s innovative subcompact and a hit in America ever since its arrival from the Far East. Originally marketed as the Aveo from 2004 to 2011, the newly named Sonic model debuted in North America for its new generation in 2011. Though somewhat new to American roads, the Sonic has been a popular pick by Glendale Heights and Bloomingdale drivers thanks to its great fuel economy, spacious interior, handsome list of standard features, and attractive price tag.

History of the Sonic

The Sonic model’s roots go all the way back to South Korea. Before the South Korean vehicle manufacturer Daewoo Motors declared bankruptcy, a small car named the Kalos had been in development for a number of years as a joint venture with Italian design and engineering firm, Italdesign Giugiaro. The Kalos replaced a similar subcompact model, the Lanos, that Daewoo had sold for a number of years before that.

In 2002, the Daewoo Kalos debuted as the now bankrupt Daewoo Motors was bought by GM to form GM Korea. The Kalos would the be sold by GM Korea in other markets as the Chevy Aveo. Chevy would later revisit the Aveo and give it a complete makeover, changing the nameplate to the Chevy Sonic.

The Current Sonic Model

The 2013 Sonic is available in either a sedan or a compact model. Both models start under $15,000, with a great list of standard features, including Bluetooth connectivity for select cell phones, auxiliary-audio input jacks, steering-wheel mounted audio controls, and onboard handsfree communication system, and more.

Both models also get fantastic fuel ratings. Drivers can expect an average of 40mpg on the highway when equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission on LT and LTZ models.

Like the 2012 model, the 2013 Sonic was chosen by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety as a Top Safety Pick because of its high performance in safety tests.
