Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid
The Efficient and Powerful Silverado Hybrid
At Sunrise Chevrolet we’re happy to be able to provide Bloomingdale families with the innovative Silverado Hybrid. Most people associate hybrid technology with small cars and tiny engines, but Chevrolet has integrated a big V8 with the same kind of technology to create much better city mileage numbers and even added power. The Silverado has been dependable for workers in Bloomingdale, and here at Sunrise Chevrolet in Glendale Heights we have been proud to offer it through the years, watching it improve with each new model.
First Generation 2004-2007
It was in 2004 that Chevy came out with the first Silverado Hybrid. Besides some badging, this truck looked no different than the beloved standard Silverado. Under the hood the first iteration of this model had a mild-hybrid powertrain. On the transmission flywheel an electric motor was mounted that would act as a starter so that the V8 could stop and start instantly. While the motor did not provide any power to the wheels it did help charge the battery and power electric systems.
The gas powered half of the engine consisted of a 5.3L Vortec V8 that would switch off during breaking and start when the driver stopped breaking. The Silverado Hybrid was popular with contractors and anyone with a need for mobile power, because three extra batteries stored power under the rear passenger seat and could be plugged into with AC outlets in the bed.
Second Generation to Present Day
Chevrolet released the second generation of the Silverado Hybrid in concert with the new GMT900 truck platform, and the total redesign of Chevy trucks.
Now the Silverado hybrid gets two separate electric motors paired with a 300-volt battery, and the powertrain is good for 322 hp and 367 lb-ft of torque. The Silverado’s maximum towing capacity is a very impressive 6100 pounds when properly equipped and the bed has a payload capacity of 1527 pounds. The sophisticated hybrid powertrain is paired with a continuously variable transmission to result in an EPA estimated 20 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. The current Silverado 1500 Hybrid is available as a crew-cab in either two or four-wheel drive.
