What to Look for When Buying a Used Car

Couple looking over paperwork in a dealership

When you know what to look for when buying a used car, you’ll be in a position to get more out of every drive. Although leaks beneath the vehicle and excessive shaking can both be signs of a bad purchase, the truth is that it pays to be comprehensive when you’re looking at a vehicle and speaking with the seller. When in doubt, remember that you can always bring the vehicle to a Chicago or Carol Stream mechanic before you sign on the dotted line!

10 Things To Ask Before Buying a Used Car

If the vehicle isn’t leaking any fluids, doesn’t have rust damage, and seems to run alright on Addison-area highways, then there’s a good chance that you’ve picked out a reliable model. Just make sure that it also has good mileage! However, since there’s a lot that most buyers won’t be able to ascertain with a visual inspection alone. That’s why it’s important to know what to ask when buying a used car:

  1. Is there a Vehicle History Report?
  2. Has the vehicle been well-maintained?
  3. Are there any broken features or amenities?
  4. Where was the vehicle previously driven?
  5. How many owners has the vehicle had?
  6. Is the vehicle under any recalls?
  7. Are there outstanding repairs that need to be made?
  8. Do you have the title in hand?
  9. Is the car protected by warranty coverage?
  10. Will my insurance premiums be affected by my purchase?

As we noted from the outset, the most important question just might be, “Can I take the vehicle to a mechanic?” An expert will be able to look over the vehicle and tell you if it’s a smart purchase. Moreover, a seller that objects to an inspection is not to be trusted.

How to Get Everything You Want from Your Next Used Car

Ultimately, your search for the perfect used car will begin well before you visit a dealership or find a time to meet up with a private seller. Follow these guidelines to make sure that your money goes as far as it can:

  1. Set your budget in advance, and don’t forget to factor in the costs of insurance, maintenance, and gas. Ideally, your total automotive expenses will not add up to more than 10-15% of your monthly income.
  2. Make a reasonable decision as to the kind of car, truck, or SUV you need. Then use resources like Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book in order to find the most reliable models from past years.
  3. Don’t be afraid to test drive multiple different models before you commit to a particular vehicle.
  4. When you apply for financing, don’t be afraid to make multiple applications. However, since applying for many loans can sometimes have a negative impact on one’s credit report, make sure to complete all of your applications within a 14-day window.
