By Sunrise Chevrolet | October 24th, 2016

ZH2 Fuel Cell for the Chevy ColoradoThe innovative engineers at General Motors have been hard at work designing their first-ever fuel-cell-operated vehicle with robust off-road performance capabilities. The result is the Chevrolet Colorado ZH2, a wholly singular take on the midsize pickup which as been designed with utility for the U.S. Army in mind. In fact, it was just revealed for the first time on October 3, 2016 at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) fall meeting. Find out what we know so far.

Off-Road Design

This innovative pickup has been built on an extended midsize pickup chassis. It sits on 37-inch off-road wheels and features a unique suspension that allows it to handle the most imposing terrain. It has been designed alongside the U.S. Army’s Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC).

Innovative Performance

This hydrogen-fuel-cell powered pickup comes with an Exportable Power Take-Off (EPTO) unit. This means that the Chevy Colorado ZH2 is able to power itself away from electric power sources. An advantage of this would be the ability of this truck to drive long distances in areas without reliable fuel sources—a common demand of U.S. military activities.

Evaluated by the U.S. army.

Before they decide if the Chevrolet Colorado ZH2 is ready to go to work for the U.S. Army, it will be tested for a variety of different capabilities. They will be looking at how its quiet powertrain is able to enable silent watching, the vehicle’s high wheel torque at different speeds through the electric drive system, the low amount of fuel it uses, the vehicle’s reduced thermal and acoustic signatures, and more.
