Answers To Common Tire Questions How To Take Care Of Tires

Take a look at your car when you have some spare time. Make sure that you can locate the following items: jack, lug wrench, inflated spare tire, and vehicle owner’s manual. These parts should already be in your vehicle, but if anything is missing, be sure to find a replacement. You might want to add handy items like wheel wedges and flashlights or weather-related items like ponchos and gloves.

Next, let’s go through the process of how to change a flat tire.

  1. Slow your vehicle down and pull over in a safe location, like an empty parking lot or along a straight stretch of road, and turn on your hazard lights. Apply the parking brake and get out of the car.
  2. Secure the wheels with wheel wedges or items like heavy rocks or bricks. These prevent the wheels from rolling while you remove the wheels.
  3. Remove the wheel cover and loosen the lug nuts with the lug wrench.
  4. Place the jack under a flat spot of the vehicle’s frame – be sure to read the instructions! Raise the vehicle about six inches from the ground.
  5. Unscrew the lug nuts completely and remove the flat tire. Put it on its side and grab your spare.
  6. Align the spare tire with the lug bolts and push. Tighten the lug nuts with your hand.
  7. Lower the vehicle until it rests on the ground lightly and tighten the lug nuts with your wrench until they are secure.
  8. Lower the car all the way to the ground and replace the hubcap. Double check the tire pressure on your spare before loading up your equipment and driving away. Don’t forget to schedule your visit to the shop as soon as possible!
