That’s exactly what the 2019 Chevy Volt and 2019 Hyundai Ioniq offer. But which of these electrified sedans is better for our Glendale Heights area car shoppers? Find out below.

The Chevy Volt and Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid both boast advanced electrified powertrains with extreme mileage capabilities, but you’d like never know it just by looking at them. These are the new wave of advanced-powertrain vehicles that forgo the wild styling buyers know this segment for and take on more toned-down approach. This helps these rigs appeal to a wider array of buyers.

The 2019 Chevrolet Volt is 180.4 inches long, 71.2 inches wide, and 56.4 inches wide. It rides atop a 106.1-inch-long wheelbase. The 2019 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid is similar in size at 176 inches long, 71.7 inches wide, and 56.9 inches tall. The Ioniq ride on a 106.3-inch wheelbase.

Interior

The 2019 Chevy Volt and 2019 Hyundai Ioniq both have traditional-looking interiors, so more buyers will find it pleasing to the eye. The Volt’s interior is a bit more tech heavy with its blue accents and digital instrument cluster. The 2019 Ioniq takes a sportier approach with its flat-bottom steering wheel and horizontally oriented dash.

The 2019 Chevrolet Volt’s front seats offer 37.8 inches of headroom, 42.1 inches of legroom, 56.5 inches of shoulder room, and 53.7 inches of hip room. The 2019 Hyundai Ioniq beats the Volt by 1.3 inches in headroom, 0.1 inches in legroom, and 0.1 inches in hip room. The Ioniq comes up short in shoulder room by 0.4 inches.

In the rear, the 2019 Volt offers 35.8 inches of headroom, 34.7 inches of legroom, 53.2 inches of shoulder room, and 51.3 inches of hip room. The 2019 Ioniq has a 1.3-inch advantage in headroom, a 0.1-inch advantage in legroom, and a 0.1-inch advantage in hip room, but the Volt wins in shoulder room by 0.4 inches.

Cargo rom is the first thing buyers look to in a plug0in model, but it can make or break a decision in some cases. The 2019 Chevy Spark offers a respectable 10.6 cubic feet of cargo room, but the Ioniq is better at 23 cubes.

Performance

Neither of these hybrid models are performance vehicles by any stretch, but they are far from slow. The 2019 Chevy Volt uses a unique powertrain that uses a gasoline generator to deliver electricity to an electric motor — there is no physical connection between the gasoline generator and the wheels. The electric motor churns out 149 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque, giving the Volt a mid-eight-second 0-to-60 sprint time.

The 2019 Hyundai Ioniq has a more traditional plug-in hybrid powertrain that uses an electric motor for propulsion while the battery is charged, but it reverts to a traditional hybrid once you deplete the battery. The Ioniq’s gasoline engine is a 104-horsepower 1.6-liter engine, and its electric motor tosses in an extra 60 horses and 125 pound-feet of torque. Together, these propulsion units pump out 139 horsepower, which sprints his plug-in to 60 mph in 10.8 seconds.

The Volt comes standard with a 3.6-kilowatt charger that tops up the batter in 13 hours on a 120-volt charger or 4.5 hours on a 240-volt unit. Buyers can opt for a 7.2-kilowatt-hour fast charger in the LT or get it standard on the Premium trim and cut the 240-volt charging time to just 2.25 hours.

With a full charge, the 2019 Volt can travel 53 miles on electricity alone and 420 miles with a full tank of gas and a charged battery. On battery alone, the Volt delivers 106 mpg-e. With a depleted battery, the Volt delivers 42 mpg combined.

The 2019 Hyundai Ioniq’s battery charges in just 8.5 hours on a 120-volt charger or two hours and 18 minutes on a 240-volt charger. With a full battery, the Ioniq can travel 29 miles on electricity alone. Add a full tank of fuel, and the Ioniq’s total cruising range is 630 miles. This all amounts to a 119 mpg-e rating in EV mode and a 52 mpg combined hybrid rating.
