Chevy Traverse Vs. Chevy Tahoe: Honking SUV or Large Crossover, Chevy Has You Covered

By Justin Cupler | March 19th, 2019

Not sure if you want a crossover or SUV? Sunrise Chevrolet offers both in the Chevy Traverse crossover and the Chevy Tahoe SUV. But which of these people and cargo haulers is best suited for you? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

Crossovers arrived to strike a balance between bulky and imposing SUVs and unstylish minivans, so there is an understandable difference in styling between the Traverse and Tahoe. The Traverse, which went through complete redesign in 2018, shares the Tahoe’s two-box design and relatively square shoulders, but its front end is more whimsical with its more tapered nose, smaller grille, and thinner headlights.

The Tahoe, which went through a redesign in 2015, features the traditional SUV look some buyers prefer. The 2019 Tahoe boasts strong shoulders, an upright rear liftgate, and a more truck-like front end. Also, it features unique turn-signals that wrap around the fenders to give it a little added style.

The 2019 Chevy Tahoe and 2019 Chevy Traverse compete in tight classes with loads of competition, so there is no shortage of standard features on each. As the newer of the two, it’s no surprise the 2019 Traverse has more modern amenities like high-intensity-discharge headlights, LED daytime running lights and taillights, high-gloss 18-inch wheels, and more.

The 2019 Tahoe is no slouch in standard features, but they are tuned to a different crowd. The 2019 Chevy Tahoe’s standard equipment includes 18-inch wheels, a tow hitch and seven-pin wiring harness, tinted windows, a roof rack, and more.

The 2019 Chevy Traverse is a large three-row crossover at 204.3 inches long, 78.6 inches wide, and 70.7 inches high. Its wheelbase checks in at 120.9 inches and weighs 4,362 to 4,403 pounds.

The 2019 Chevy Tahoe is shorter at 203.9 inches long, but it’s wider at 80.5 inches wide and taller at 74.4 inches high. The Tahoe’s wheelbase is also shorter at 116 inches. The Tahoe outweighs the Traverse by about 1,000 pounds at 5,355 to 5,602 pounds.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Traverse

  • Sleek crossover styling
  • High-tech exterior features

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Tahoe

  • Bold SUV looks
  • More utility-focused exterior features

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Traverse and 2019 Tahoe share a ton of the Chevy family design language. Their center stacks are similar in their setup and button formats. Both models also feature four-spoke steering wheels with the same buttons mounted on the, and they both have trick touchscreens that rise to reveal small storage cubbies behind them.

Where they differ is in dash style. While the 2019 Chevy Traverse has a more sedan-like look to it, the Tahoe has a larger, blockier dash that dome buyers may find a touch imposing. Like the exteriors, Chevy clearly designed these cabins with specific buyers in mind.

The These three-row crossovers and SUVs are all about cabin room, and both offer plenty of it. Up front, the 2019 Chevy Traverse offers 41.3 inches of headroom, 41 inches of legroom, 62.1 inches of shoulder room, and 58.1 inches of hip room. The Tahoe has an extra 1.5 inches of headroom, 4.3 inches in legroom, 2.7 inches of headroom, and 2.9 inches of hip room.

In its second row, the 2019 Traverse has 40 inches of headroom, 38.4 inches of legroom, 62.2 inches of shoulder room, and 56.9 inches of hip room. The Tahoe matches the Traverse’s 40 inches of headroom and beats the Traverse in all other second-row measurements with an extra 0.3 inches of legroom, 2.9 inches of shoulder room, and 3.4 inches of hip room.

Third rows are rarely roomy, but the 2019 Traverse has decent roominess with 38.2 inches of headroom, 33.5 inches of legroom, 57.5 inches of shoulder room, and 48.5 inches of hip room. The Tahoe is tighter in headroom by 0.1 inches and legroom by a whopping 8.7 inches, but it has an extra 5.1 inches of shoulder room and 0.8 inches of hip room.

Cargo room is a huge deal in the crossover segment, and the 2019 Traverse delivers the goods with 23 cubic feet of cargo room with all three rows upright, 58.1 cubic feet with the third row folded, and a spacious 98.2 cubes with all three rows folded. The Tahoe also offers decent cargo room but comes up short by 7.7 cubes behind the third row, 6.8 cubes behind the second row, and 3.5 cubes with all three rows folded.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Traverse

  • Smoother, sedan-like styling
  • Tons more third-row legroom
  • Tons more cargo room with seats upright

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Tahoe

  • Roomier first and second rows
  • More rugged interior looks

Performance

The 2019 Chevy Traverse comes standard with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. This routes through a standard nine-speed automatic transmission and out to the front wheels. Optionally, buyers can add all-wheel drive.

Those who opt for the Traverse RS get a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 257 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This engine is only available with front-wheel drive — the all-wheel-drive RS comes with the 3.6-liter V-6.

The 2019 Chevy Tahoe forgoes the whole small-engine deal for a standard 5.3-liter V-8 powerplant that delivers 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. This power routes through a six-speed automatic transmission and out to the rear wheels. Buyers can swap this out for optional four-wheel drive.

Buyers can also get the Tahoe with a 6.2-liter V-8 that produces 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, but it requires ticking a few option boxes. First, you must choose the range-topping Premier trim, then you have to choose the RST Edition package, which include the larger V-8 engine, black bow tie emblems, 22-inch wheels, and more. This engine pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission and standard rear-wheel drive. This engine is available with optional four-wheel drive.

In larger crossovers like the Traverse, towing can play a role in the decision process, but it is rarely the first thing buyers look to. With its V-6 engine, the Traverse performs well with a 5,000-pound towing capacity after adding the trailering package. With the 2.0-liter engine, the capacity crashes to 1,500 pounds.

In full-size SUVs like the Tahoe, towing can play a much bigger role, and it shows. The 2019 Tahoe can tow up to up to 8,600 pounds with the 5.3-liter engine, two-wheel drive, and the trailering package. Adding the extra heft of the 6.2-liter V-8 engine pulls the towing capacity down by 200 pounds.

Fuel economy does play a role in buying large crossovers and full-size SUVs, but most buyers realize there will be some sacrifice in this area. The Traverse is decent for its size at up to 18 mpg city, 27 highway, and 21 combined with the V-6 engine. With its 2.0-liter engine, the Traverse gets up to 20 mpg city, 26 highway, and 22 combined.

The big, bad Tahoe is much worse at up to up to 15 mpg city, 22 highway, and 18 combined with its 5.3-liter engine and up to 14 mpg city, 23 highway, and 17 combined with the 6.2-liter engine.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Traverse

  • Big fuel economy advantage
  • Peppy turbocharged engine
  • Handles more like a sedan

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Tahoe

  • Big towing capacity
  • Powerful V-8 options
  • True four-wheel drive for off-the-beaten-path driving
