The Chevy Suburban just went through a redesign in 2015, making it just six model years old. At one time, that would be about the halfway point of a lifecycle for an SUV, but today’s fast-changing SUV segment requires more agility. To help keep Chevy’s largest SUV competitive, we introduce the all-new 2021 Suburban. Here’s what to expect when it hits our new-Chevy showroom serving Lombard, Wheaton, Carol Stream, and the surrounding areas.
Sharp, New Body
Kicking off the 2021 Chevy Suburban is an all-new body that’s 225.7 inches long that rides on a 134.1-inch-long wheelbase. These measurements make the new Suburban’s body and wheelbase 1.3 and 4.1 inches longer, respectively, than the previous generation.
Beyond being larger, the 2021 Suburban also gets an all-new appearance. Fortunately, the all-new Suburban will retain the blocky, upright look it’s had for decades, but it will take on a bolder, more eye-grabbing look. This redesign will include a large, dual-port grille, thin LED headlights, C-shaped LED signature lighting, and more.
Down its long sides, the 2021 Suburban keeps its relatively flat sheet metal, but there are two deep character lines to break things up a bit.
Around back, the 2021 Suburban hits the road with new taillights featuring striking LED graphics that create L-shaped signatures. Flowing between the taillights is a chrome applique to dress up this backside a bit.
Rounding out the new-look 2021 Suburban will be standard with 18-inch wheels in its LS and LT trims. The Premier and Z71 trims will boast 20-inch wheels, but the latter will also include all-terrain tires. The RST and High Country trims will top the range with 22-inch rollers.
Fresh on the Inside too
The new-generation Suburban will also be all-new on the inside. The current Suburban is plenty upscale for most buyers, but the new model will move things up a notch with its “floating” touchscreen, clean and luxurious-looking dash, and loads of upscale materials.
On top of this new design, the Suburban also gets plenty of new tech and entertainment features. This includes a standard 10-inch touchscreen and 4.2-inch driver-information center, and an 8-inch configurable gauge cluster on Premier and High Country trims. Buyers can also add a rear-seat media system that includes dual headrest-mounted 12.6-inch monitors.
Like the current generation, the 2021 Suburban will include standard Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, and 4G LTE Wi-Fi® (data plan required). On every trim other than the LS, the Suburban will include wireless charging with a charging cooler to keep your device from overheating and pausing its charge.
The Suburban’s updated cabin also gets more room, thanks to its longer body and wheelbase. In its third row, it gains 2.2 inches of legroom, putting it at an adult-friendly 36.7 inches. It also sees a 2.3-inch legroom boost to 42 inches in the second row. Rounding out the interior gains are boosts of 1.8 cubic feet and 23 cubic feet of cargo room behind the third and front row, respectively. This puts these measurements ar 41.1 and 144.7 cubic feet.
Distinct Trim Levels
The 2021 Suburban lineup sits atop two key trim levels: LS and LT. It also boasts four higher trims designed for specific types of buyers.
The RST trim is for buyers who want a little extra sportiness with its unique front fascia that includes a Black Ice-finished grille, black-chrome exterior trim, 22-inch wheels, RST-spec seats with contrasting stitching, and more.
Buyers who plan to take their Suburban off the beaten path regularly will appreciate the more rugged Z71 trim. It boasts standard four-wheel drive, revised front fascia that delivers a better approach angle, a two-speed transfer case, hill-descent control, 20-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber, front skid plate, red tow hooks, and black and black-chrome accents.
The Premier trim adds to the Suburban’s premium aura with Magnetic Ride Control, navigation, an 8-inch reconfigurable gauge cluster, a Bose® 10-speaker audio system, 12-way power front seats with ventilation, a heated steering wheel, and 20-inch wheels. The Premier trim also enhances safety with its standard Safety Alert Seat, lane-change alert with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, and front and rear parking sensors.
The range-topping High Country model takes everything the Premier trim offers and adds a unique grille with bronze accents, High Country sill plates and seat embroidery, more color options, a 6.2-liter V-8 engine, 22-inch wheels with chrome inserts, rear pedestrian alerts, a class-exclusive 15-inch head-up display, and a high-definition 360-degree camera. Buyers can also add optional adaptive air-ride suspension that can raise and lower the vehicle by 4 inches and adaptive cruise control.
New, Torque-Heavy Engine Option
The 2021 Chevy Suburban will carry on with both engines from the current generation, giving it a standard 5.3-liter V-8 that cranks out 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque and an optional 6.2-liter V-8 with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.
The new-for-2021 engine is a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 with 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. This engine will deliver all the torque buyers need to tow a heavy trailer, but it’ll also deliver phenomenal highway fuel economy. We’ll learn more on the latter as it works its way through EPA testing.
Every 2021 Chevy Suburban will come standard with a 10-speed automatic transmission and rear- or four-wheel drive.
Safety is Now Standard
Automatic emergency braking will now be standard across the entire 2021 Chevy Suburban lineup. Currently, only the Suburban LT and higher trims offer this vital feature standard.
In addition to the standard automatic braking, the 2021 Suburban’s other available safety equipment includes a high-definition rearview camera, forward-collision warning, following-distance indicator, front pedestrian braking, rear pedestrian warning, rear park assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and hitch guidance on the rearview camera.
Coming to the Orange Park Area in Mid-2020
The 2021 Chevy Suburban will hit the Sunrise Chevrolet showroom, serving Lombard, Wheaton, and the surrounding area, in mid-2020. Pricing is not available yet, but we should learn more about that as we near its on-sale date.
