2020 Chevrolet Impala Vs 2020 Honda Accord

By Justin Cupler | September 4th, 2020

Large family sedans have lost some steam with the popularity of crossovers, but plenty of shoppers in the Wheaton and surrounding areas seek out the Chevy Impala and Honda Accord. They are not only roomy, but they are also packed with features, offer surprising levels of performance, and deliver years of reliable transportation. Which is the better buy for you? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

In 2014, Chevy gave the Impala a comprehensive overhaul, shedding its aging, rental-fleet body in favor of a sharper-angled and more aggressive design. It was an immediate hit, as buyers of all ages saw a lot to love in this new look. The 2020 Impala continues with that same look, albeit with a simpler lineup of trim levels than before, as Chevy dropped the base LS and now offers just the LT and Premier grades.

The Honda Accord went through a big-time redesign of its own back in 2018. The debut of the 10th-generation Accord brought in a more sophisticated look with a flatter nose, bold grille, wraparound headlights, purposeful body lines, and a sleek C-pillar that gave it a coupe-like look. This stunning sedan remains the same in 2018, giving the Impala a run for its stylistic money.

While both sedans are great looking, the big separation between them is the Impala is a full-size sedan to the Accord’s midsize status. This shows in their dimensions, as the Accord is just over 9 inches shorter than the Impala. Despite being shorter, the Accord it 0.3 inches wider and rides on a 1.8-inch-longer wheelbase, which helps free up some cabin space.

In terms of standard exterior features, the Impala is very well-equipped with its standard 18-inch wheels, body-color door handles, intermittent windshield wipers, halogen headlights, LED daytime running lights, auto-on/off headlights, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, and more.

The Accord has smaller wheels at 17 inches and lacks the mirror-integrated turn signals, but it gains LED low-beam headlights and brake lights.

Advantage: 2020 Honda Accord

  •       Slick coupe-like roofline
  •       Mature front end
  •       Standard LED lighting

Advantage: 2020 Chevy Impala

  •       More muscular design
  •       Larger standard wheels

Interior

Inside, the 2020 Chevy Impala boasts a mixture of old and new with its throwback steering wheel that features a thick horizontal post that simulates the old two-post wheels from the 60s and 70s and all its modern styling bits. The latter includes a shapely dashboard with plenty of contrasting colors and available premium materials. There is also a trick 8-inch touchscreen that rises with a PIN to reveal a small storage area behind it.

The 2020 Accord also boasts a sharp cabin, but it does so with a focus on horizontal lines and attractive appliques on the dash. Add to that its floating infotainment screen, a clean center stack, and a three-spoke steering wheel, and the Accord clearly turns its focus to the younger crowd.

As for standard features, the Impala is incredibly well-equipped with a standard 8-inch touchscreen, the Chevrolet Infotainment System, Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, 4G LTE Wi-Fi®, and much more. The base Accord LX lacks all the standard tech features mentioned above and uses a standard 7-inch non-touchscreen infotainment system, but it gets a leg up in safety with standard automatic emergency braking, road-departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane-keep assist, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high-beam headlights. These are all options on the Impala.

In terms of interior roominess, the larger Impala gets a huge advantage in front legroom and smaller wins in front headroom, rear headroom, and rear shoulder room. The Accord, despite being smaller, has an extra 0.6 inches of rear legroom thanks to its longer wheelbase. The Impala comes back to win big in trunk space at 18.8 cubic feet – 2.1 cubes larger than the Accord’s – making it a great weekend getaway vehicle.

Performance

Under its hood, the 2020 Chevy Impala has just one engine option: a 3.5-liter V-6 with 305 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque. This potent V-6 mates with a six-speed automatic transmission that ships power to the front wheels for an impressive 6.7-second gallop to 60 mph.

The Accord dropped its V-6 engine with the arrival of the 10th generation model, leaving it with a standard 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that pumps out 192 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. This power hurries through a CVT and out to the front wheels for a 7.3-second 0-to-60 sprint time.

Optionally, buyers can pick up a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that pumps 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission for a 5.5-second 0-to-60 time.

Across the board, the Impala gets far worse fuel economy than the Accord.
